Love's Delusion
On rare occasions an innovation in contemporary theatre comes along that is both stimulating as well as entertaining.
Created and developed by Gwendolyn Masin, In Search Of Lost Time presented a unique theatrical adaptation of literature inspired by music through the interweaving of live music and drama. The two-act piece, the first in a series of such symbioses to be adapted and staged, was presented by accomplished artists from Amsterdam, Dublin, Hannover and New York.
In a celebration of four of the greatest names in art: the writers Marcel Proust and Lev Tolstoy and the composers César Franck and Ludwig van Beethoven, this two hour stage production proved to be not only innovative but ground-breaking.
Proust’s “Swann in Love” combined with Franck’s Violin and Piano Sonata in A major and Tolstoy’s “Kreutzer Sonata” in conjunction with Beethoven’s Violin and Piano Sonata No. 9 in A major (“Kreutzer” Sonata) - reflect the artistic crossover between music and literature. The texts were adapted for the stage and expressed through the mouthpiece of two actors, each representing one of the two hero’s in the classic literature works. The music was performed live on stage allowing for the musicians to become an organic part of the drama.
After a year of intense preparation, Love’s Delusion, presented by In Search of Lost Time, successfully took to the stage on five different occasions in four sold-out locations, within one week in September 2004 and was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. The venues included the Spiegel Tent, as part of Dublin's Fringe Festival and the Civic Theater, Dublin.
